Brown Township

Brown Township is a civil township located in rural Manistee County, Michigan. The township was organized in 1855 and has a total area of 36.2 square miles. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Brown Township has a population of approximately 750 residents and a density of 18 people per square mile. The Big Manistee River runs through the heart of Brown Township which makes the area a sportsman’s paradise. In addition to the Big Manistee its tributaries Bear Creek and Chief Creek, Brown Township is positioned close to Lake Michigan fishing and beaches, abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, and easy access to the Manistee National Forest and Manistee River State Game Area.

SPECIAL NOTICE - Winter tax bills were mailed December 1st. Office hours to pay taxes in person: December 29, 2025, February 17, 2026, and March 2, 2026 from 9 AM - 5 PM at the Brown Township Hall. Last day to pay winter taxes without interest or penalty is February 17th. Please call Melissa at 231-676-0431 with questions regarding property taxes.

Regular Board Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month, 6:30 p.m. at Brown Township Hall (unless posted otherwise).
Household refuse is collected on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Brown Township Hall. More information Click Here.
